Let's face it. Deciding what everyone will wear for your family pictures can be challenging! It doesn't have to be. Let me help you with some basic steps to follow.
Choosing Your Style
Start by choosing your style. Outfits don’t need to be fancy, but it should be nicer than your usual leggings and sweater or jeans and a t-shirt. I always love it when mom picks a dress. Casual, flowy dresses look great on everyone! Little kids are going to run and move, so choose outfits that move comfortably and are appropriate for the season and weather. Older kids should also dress comfortably in clothing that moves with them, rather than restricts movement. You may be standing, sitting, or squatting down. Dads look great in khakis or a nice pair of jeans.
Timeless Look
Think about what you want your final photos to look like. Are you planning on purchasing wall art for your home? What is the color scheme of your home? Neutrals and earthtones are classic and go with everything. Jewel tones are rich and vibrant and photograph really well. Avoid wearing neons, anything with logos, or anything too "busy." These memories will last lifetime, so a timeless look is always a great choice!
Consider the Location & Setting
Location sets the tone for the session. Whether you are in a field, wooded area, or a downtown urban area, your outfits should match that vibe. You may choose a dress for a field or downtown, but you wouldn't wear heels in a field. Speaking of heels, make sure your shoes are comfortable to walk in and stand in for at least a short amount of time, definitely for the length of your session!
Everyone Doesn't Have to Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing blue jeans and a white shirt. There's nothing wrong with that, if that's what you want for your pictures. But it's more important to choose colors that are in the same palette, rather than everyone wearing the same color! There are various shades of every color, and going with a palette ensures a cohesive look rather than everyone in different shades of blue! It's okay to combine textures and contrast and layer items, such as a cardigan over a turtleneck or a blazer over a button down shirt or a nice neutral t-shirt. Choose colors that compliment each other but don't necessarily "match."
Pick One Outfit and Plan Around It
I often suggest mom choose her outfit first! Whatever she feels best in and loves should be the staple of the session. Plan the colors and other outfits around that.
Most Important
Make sure you can move comfortably in your outfits! The most important thing to remember is to choose what you feel best in! When you feel confident in front of the camera, it truly comes across in the images!
